The MERLIN project is proud to announce a successful webinar titled “Enhancing the Circular Economy of Plastic Packaging,” held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from 10:00 to 12:30 CET. This virtual event brought together industry leaders and external experts to share knowledge and discuss best practices in circular packaging design, material recovery, and consumer education.

Event Highlights:

Welcome & Introduction The event commenced with a warm welcome and introduction by Ahmad Hafiz and Alexander Mannweiler from the Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP), setting the stage for an engaging and informative session.

Lessons from Good Practices Ahmad Hafiz, CSCP, shared valuable lessons from good practices, highlighting successful strategies and initiatives in the circular economy of plastic packaging.

Insights into Circular Packaging Design Cesar Aliaga from ITENE, Head of the Packaging and Circular Economy Unit, provided deep insights into circular packaging design, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in packaging solutions.

Circular Packaging from a Consumer Perspective Stephan Schaller, Senior Consultant at CSCP, explored circular packaging from a consumer perspective, drawing on his extensive experience in sustainability strategy and reporting.

Innovative Process of Material Recovery from EoL Multilayer Plastic Packaging Marianne Gravendeel of Ioniqa Technologies B.V. presented an innovative process for material recovery from end-of-life multilayer plastic packaging, showcasing advanced technological solutions in chemical engineering.

Assessment of Circularity of Packaging: “Made for Recycling” Tool Julian Thielen from Interseroh+ GmbH introduced the “Made for Recycling” tool, a comprehensive assessment method for evaluating the circularity of packaging.

Roundtable Discussion and Interactive Group Sessions Alexander Mannweiler from CSCP moderated a roundtable discussion on the challenges and opportunities of circular packaging. This was followed by interactive group discussions led by Ahmad Hafiz, Zhao Cheng, and Alexander Mannweiler, focusing on circular design, consumer awareness, recycling, and policy recommendations.

Wrap-up and Closing The event concluded with a wrap-up and closing remarks by Alexander Mannweiler and Ahmad Hafiz, summarizing the key takeaways and future directions for enhancing the circular economy of plastic packaging.
